The historic Frink Gym was the setting for the annual Panhandle Pioneer Settlement Volunteer Appreciation Banquet held Thursday night.
Dozens of volunteers who have contributed countless hours working in the General Store, helping with Settlement events, and providing assistance in a variety of ways were honored. Volunteers were treated to a delicious dinner, along with entertainment by Cherie White and her daughter, Sarah Lynn.
Marti Vickery, the new Settlement Director, served as mistress of ceremonies. She had the honor of presenting the Volunteer of the Year Award to Lawana McDonald (pictured above). If you have been to Pioneer Day or Folklife Days at the Settlement, you have certainly seen Lawana demonstrating how to make hoecakes and cracklins as she tells stories of how life was back in the mid 1800s. Lawana has been a dedicated volunteer for many years and truly loves serving at the Settlement.
Mark your calendars for October 3 when the Settlement will be celebrating it’s 20th anniversary. More details soon.
