Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was remembered Monday in Calhoun County and across the nation. Folks gathered at Blountstown City Hall bright and early for a march through downtown to St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church on River Street. From there, transportation was provided to the W.T. Neal Civic Center where an MLK Day program was held. The event was coordinated by Sally Gadson and committee members, Deborah Hammond and Anna Everett.
“As we celebrate Dr. King’s life today, I encourage all Floridians to celebrate his legacy by remembering his message of equality and reflect on his inspiring words,” said Governor Charlie Crist in a press statement. “Dr. King’s vision for America was one of unity, without division by race or religion, class or gender. He paved the way for the progress that we have made today. Remembered as a civil rights champion, King’s speeches, including the memorable “I Have A Dream,” continue to inspire Americans of every race and promote respect and compassion for all mankind. Dr. King had the foresight to envision a day when our nation would rise above the divisiveness of racism and embrace tolerance and acceptance. While Dr. King’s work may never be finished, it is my hope that we never lose sight of the dream that changed a nation.”
