School Board hiring $70k HR Director

The Calhoun County School Board voted 3-1 at their last meeting to create a human resources director position with a starting salary of over $70,000.

“One of the areas that I have been wanting to enhance since becoming Superintendent is to improve the service to our employees,” says School Superintendent Ralph Yoder. “Without a dedicated HR person, our current process is not systematized, as I feel it should be.”

Yoder says the recent vote by local educators to join a teachers union also factored into the decision.

“With the forthcoming changes this development will bring to the district, it was our belief that it is in the best interest of the district to establish a director of human resources and employee relations to spearhead our efforts in negotiating with the union and servicing the HR needs of our employees,” Yoder remarks.

The salary range for the position is $71,925 - $75,982. Yoder says three district employees recently retired and two of those positions will not be filled, providing the necessary funds for the new HR director. “Taking the cost of the HR Director position into consideration, the Calhoun County School District will still save over $70,000 by not filling those two district-level positions,” Yoder notes.

Board members Ken Speights, Tim Smith and Danny Ryals voted in favor of the measure. Danny Hassig was not in attendance. Kelly King was opposed to creating the new position at this time.
