Two Wewa men are in critical condition following a single vehicle crash on the Calhoun-Gulf county line Monday afternoon.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Eric Sims, 21, and Tyler Bowles, 20, were both airlifted to area hospitals following the accident.
Sims was reportedly behind the wheel of a 1997 Ford Explorer traveling westbound on Iola Road just after 4 p.m. FHP Trooper Ron Cox says the vehicle traveled into soft dirt and sand. Sims is believed to have overcorrected and the vehicle overturned, landing on it’s roof.
Christina McCain, 24, Sims’ girlfriend, was the front seat passenger. She was thrown into the back seat, but was not injured.
Fastened in their carseats in the backseat were McCain’s two small children, Dylan Kemp and Joshua Barnett. The boys were not injured.
Bowles was also a backseat passenger. Both he and Sims were ejected from the vehicle. Bowles reportedly sustained internal chest injuries and was flown to Bay Medical Center. Sims received head injuries and was airlifted to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.
None of the adults were wearing seatbelts.
The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
Assisting the Florida Highway Patrol at the scene were Calhoun County EMS, the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, and both Kinard and Scotts Ferry volunteer fire departments.
