Congratulations to the Culinary Team of Chesley Jones, Deana Griswold, and Alexis Sharloch who brought home First Place and Gold Medals at the District Competition held January 22 at Marianna High School.
There were four schools competing and this is the first time in several years that our team has placed with a gold medal.
Teams were only given a list of equipment to bring and had no idea of what the recipes were before they arrived at the competition. Each team had to prepare and plate a salad, an entrée with a vegetable, and a dessert in little of one hour. The team was judged on their mise en place (organization), sanitation and safety, knife cooking skills, as well as taste and plating. Altha School will be representing District 1 at state competition in March.
The students stated, “From the beginning, we didn't know what we were going to cook, all we knew was the supplies we needed. From planning our every move down to the last minute setting up our table and placing the food on the plate, we had to work as a team. Ever seen the show, Chopped? That's how it felt. The pressure of the judges watching you and making sure everything is just perfect is extremely nerve-wrecking.
The hour wait for the results was the worse. In all honesty, I never expected to win gold, but I'm proud of our teamwork and dedication to win and represent Altha Highs Culinary section at state.”
