On Monday, February 3, the students at BHS had a very interesting time at an assembly in which Mr. Victor DeNoble spoke.
The assembly was hosted by the BHS Chapter of SWAT (Students Working Against Tobacco). Mr. DeNoble spoke to the students about his time working for a tobacco company trying to find a safe drug to replace nicotine. He told the students that the company didn’t want him to find out why nicotine was addictive or what it did, they wanted a safe replacement for nicotine. When the safe drug was found, the company decided to use it. On a later date, they told Mr. DeNoble that they couldn’t use his drug. If they used it, they said, the public would know that they had been lying to them about the safety and addictiveness of tobacco all these years.
Mr. DeNoble was fired and couldn’t tell anyone what he knew about the tobacco company. In short, Mr. DeNoble took top secret documents from the company, got them taken from him, found one piece of evidence and took it to Washington. The tobacco companies were fined and many laws were formed to help protect the safety of the young people of America. Everyone at the assembly was encouraged not to use tobacco, or any other drugs for that matter.
Mr. DeNoble is shown displaying the brain of his monkey, that was addicted to nicotine. He was also able to share the brain of a man who died of lung cancer as a result of using tobacco.
