Michael Eugene Sheldon, Chief of Police - Morrice Police Department, 60, of Owosso passed away in the line of duty Wednesday, October 2, 2013, in Grayling, Michigan, while attending a Police Chief's Conference.
A funeral service was held at 11 AM Monday, October 7, at the First Free Methodist Church, 1249 North Chipman, Owosso, with Rev. Terry Bailey and Rev. Lewis Wheeler, co-officiants. Final rest was at New (West) Riverside Cemetery in Henderson. Honors were provided by members of the Morrice Police Department and the Shiawassee County Veterans Honors Squad.
Michael was born June 8, 1953, in Edinburgh, Indiana, the son of Ralph Eugene and Sarah Nell (Clements) Plair. He grew up in northern Florida and was a Paramedic in Tallahassee when he met Sandra Renae Bailey. He and Sandra were married in Tallahassee on December 17, 1993.
Later, Mike was a Police/Fire officer with the Quincy, Florida Department of Public Safety. He and Sandra moved to Michigan in 2001. He worked with the Elsie Police Department for a short time and then joined the Morrice Police Department as a patrol officer on March 25, 2002 and became Chief in 2005. Mike loved scuba diving, especially in caves; camping, boating, and hunting with his family. He loved gospel music and was the soundman for the family gospel singing group. Mike was one who set his priorities in life - church, family and serving others in his community.
Those who cherish his memory include his wife, Sandra, of Owosso; children, Heidi Davis of Owosso, Spencer (Drazana) Sheldon of Orlando, FL, Amanda, Chad, and Tyler Sheldon of Owosso; brother, Richard (Eileen) Sheldon of Los Angeles, CA; sisters, Ruthie Rhodes of Panama City, FL and Peggy Whitfield Plair of Blountstown, FL; nephews, Zachary Whifield of Altha, FL, Wesley Whitfield of Blountstown, FL; nieces, Brittany Whitfield of Blountstown, FL and Kayla Rhodes of Panama City, FL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, step father, Bruce Sheldon, and step mother, Mae Plair.
Memorials are suggested for his children's education fund.
