A female jailer in Liberty County found herself in a fight for her life last week after a male inmate attempted to escape.
Kyle David Blankenship, 21, has been charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence, kidnapping and escape.
According to the Liberty County Sheriff's Office, Ofc. Susan Barber was working alone in the jail during the early morning hours of August 26 when she went upstairs to make a routine security check around 1 a.m. As she started out the door of the men's dorm, Blankenship allegedly grabbed her and a struggle ensued. The pair wound up on the floor in the foyer outside the dorm, with the cell door shutting - and locking - behind them. Male inmates in the dorm tried to get to the jailer, but were unable to open the door. They watched helplessly, making as much noise as possible to alert anyone in hearing distance.
Blankenship allegedly choked and struck Ofc. Barber, plus blocked the exit and deprived her of keys to several locked doors surrounding her. Sources at the LCSO say she had no weapon to defend herself.
