A Blountstown woman was arrested last week for neglect of the elderly.
Sheila Mayes, 44, is charged in the case.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, Mayes is a certified nursing assistant at a local rehab facility. She was reportedly told to turn an elderly patient every hour. On one occasion during the spring, Mayes helped turn the patient at 12:30 p.m. and clean him. The man was discovered between 5:30 and 6 p.m. groaning and aggravated. He was found covered in feces from the waist down. Mayes allegedly admitted to not changing or turning him.
Other nurses spent 30 to 40 minutes cleaning out wounds that were seeping with blood.
During an interview, Mayes allegedly told an investigator she didn’t turn the patient because she was busy and did not have time.
Mayes had reportedly been disciplined 11 times - six for neglect and sleeping on the job and three for verbal abuse to residents and fellow staff members.
Mayes was booked into the Calhoun County Jail and given a conditional release.
