Mr. Thomas Sterling “Tommy” Smith, 74, of Altha, FL, said his final farewell, June 18, 2013.
Tommy was born in Quincy, FL, on January 23, 1939. He graduated from the University of Florida and worked for the Florida Department of Agriculture for over thirty years. Tommy loved living on the Chipola River, spending time with his family, working in the yard, and caring for his dogs. His witty sense of humor and big heart was enjoyed by all who knew him well.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Frank Smith Sr., and Edna Owens Smith; his brother, John Frank “Bobo” Smith, Jr.; and his sister, Marianne Smith Curry.
He is survived by his daughter, Victoria Leigh Smith Bigsby and her husband, Joe, of Tallahassee, FL; sons, Thomas S. Smith, Jr., and his wife, Kayla, of Marianna, FL; John Michael Smith and wife, Kim, of Altha; four grandsons, Dylan and Mason Smith, and Wake and Miller Bigsby, and a granddaughter, Karsyn Smith, to all of whom he was “Big Pop.” He is also survived by his former wife and friend, Velma Smith, of Blountstown.
An informal “Celebration of Life” will be held at Peavy Funeral Home Chapel in Blountstown on Saturday, June 22, from 5:00 until 7:00 PM (CDT). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chipola Nursing Pavilion Activity Department, 4294 Third Avenue, Marianna, FL 32446, to carry on Tommy’s generous spirit.
Whether he was known as Tommy, Daddy, Big Daddy, Big Pop, or Mr. Smith, he will be greatly missed.
