Supreme Court to rule on local man’s drug case

Clay Harris took his case before the Florida Supreme Court and won, with justices ruling that Aldo, the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office K-9 cop, was unreliable at detecting drugs. Harris was stopped in 2006 in Liberty County, Aldo gave a positive alert to drugs and meth was found, leading to Harris’ arrest. However, when stopped a couple months later, Aldo also gave a positive alert, but this time drugs were not discovered in the vehicle. The discrepancy put Aldo’s abilities in question and the court decided to toss the case.

Since that time, the state of Florida has appealed Harris’ case and it is expected to go before the Supreme Court, along with another similar case out of Miami. A decision is expected next year.
