The Blountstown High School faculty has selected “Coach” David Earl Pitts as the 2009 Homecoming Parade Grand Marshall.

David Pitts attended Blountstown schools, graduating from BHS in 1962. He was an outstanding high school athlete who played football and baseball all four years of high school. He played tackle on the BHS Tiger football team, earning All-Conference recognition and an athletic scholarship to FSU during his senior year.

Following his college graduation, David returned to Blountstown with his wife, Dyan Marshall Pitts. David began teaching at BHS where he spent the next 42 years teaching and coaching. In 1976 and 1977, Coach Pitts led the “Fighting Tigers” to the only football state championships that our school has earned!

Also, perhaps just as memorable, Coach Pitts taught a multitude of high school students to drive as the county Driver’s Education teacher! During his career, David Pitts has had a tremendous impact on the young people of our community and our world. His legacy will not soon be forgotten!

Coach Pitts retired last school year and the BHS teachers and students miss his charm and charisma everyday! Last spring, the faculty and staff of Blountstown High School honored David Pitts with an entertaining and treasured retirement luncheon at The Callahan Restaurant. Now, in honor of his service to our school and community, we are proud to announce that David Earl Pitts in the 2009 Grand Marshall of the Blountstown High School Homecoming Parade!

The parade will be held on Friday, September 25th, beginning at 1 p.m. It will leave BHS and travel to BES and Parthenon Healthcare Center. Then, it will return to pass in front of BHS then move down Highway 71 to the intersection of Highway 20. It will turn left and proceed to Wakulla Bank where it will then turn back to the left and return to BHS. We encourage everyone to come out and view the parade and pay tribute to Coach David Pitts.

Congratulations to Coach David Pitts! This fine man taught me how to live very early on in life. Coach Pitts drilled the fundamentals of hard work, dedication, discipline and integrity into the minds of all the athletes and students he coached and taught. It worked on most all of them (including me) and I can say that those lessons have kept me alive and thriving for almost 40 years especially in my travels worldwide. He also taught me not to give up when the battle gets tough -to gut it out- and how to parallel park and perform a three-point-turn! (He never had to use the extra steering wheel or the extra brakes either!) Most of all I appreciate the fact that Coach Pitts taught me how to carry myself as a gentleman, be respectful of everyone and be a man of my word. (For the young folks reading this: Your word is your bond!) I wish I could be there in person to honor this great man, but I will have to do so from afar. So, Coach Pitts, congrats and good luck the rest of the way. Thank you for teaching me the right way.

With warm regards,

Wayne F. Boyd

1976 and 1977 the only years the Tigers won state? What happened to Coach Tom Freeman and all the players on th 1973 state championship team? Someone needs to do their homework before writing articles for publication. Not to mention this information is painted on the wall at the stadium as well.

I remember Coach Pitts as a very outstanding and humble man. Always there to guide his students. His personality was a shining beacon to all the students. I will always remember our two winning seasons. 1977 especially..I was a senior. So, Coach Pitts, CONGRATULATIONS!! And the best in life.
