Azalea Street in Blountstown now has a new name thanks to the efforts of a local mail carrier.

Eddie Miele felt Tuskegee Airman Cornelius Davis needed to be officially honored and set about to make that happen. With the blessing of the City Council, the street name has now been changed. Shown at the dedication are (front, from left) Councilman Clifford Jackson, Angela Davis, Cornelius Davis, City Manager Emory Pierce, (back row) Police Chief Rodney Smith, Councilman Tony Shoemake, Commissioner Truman Grant, Robert Trammell, Eddie Miele, Park Trammell, David Bridges and School Board member Kenneth Speights.

β€œI feel it is an honor for Mr. Cornelius Davis to have the street were he was born named after him,” Speights remarks.

β€œIt is a challenge to our youth to strive to do something great in life so they, too, may have their name go up in lights or on a street. Because of his participation, dedication, and bravery as a Tuskegee Airmen, Mr. Davis is not only a hero to this community, but to this nation. I would also like to thank the City Council for their unanimous vote to move forward with this project and everyone involved. Remember, it is better to give someone flowers while they can still smell them and it is better to honor a hero than to let a hero be forgotten.”

When people ask, "Where are you from?" I automatically say I am from BLOUNTSTOWN. Most would tell me, if I were you, I would tell people Tallahassee. This is a prime example of why I am proud of my hometown. Once again the community at large coming together to honor not a black, white or hispanic hero, but an American WWWII hero!!!

Bravo! A great move by the council. And many thanks to Mr. Davis, and all other veterans, for serving our country.
