School Board salary cut leads to new band equipment at BHS

The Calhoun County School Board created a fund four years ago and a portion of that money has enabled the Blountstown High School band to purchase a new drum set.

Board members voted to cut 10 percent from their salaries with funds placed in an account to pay for such needs as state championship rings for all school teams, from culinary to business to sports. In addition, needs such as the drum set are now able to be met.

School Board member Danny Hassig was on hand for the presentation and noted, “The fund is up to $40,000 and, if we keep voting to do this every year, we will eventually be able to offer scholarships.”

Superintendent Tommy McClellan commended Stewart Hobbie who took the reigns as band director. “He is doing a terrific job recruiting and building this program,” McClellan said, adding that over 50 fifth grade students have expressed interest in joining the band next year when they reach middle school. This should be an example to the LIBERTY County School Board, who, far from doing something like this, gave themselves a $2200 BONUS, along with all the OVERSTAFFED and OVERPAID top level administrators. They did this because the school teachers were given a $1400 bonus from stimulus money, to help make up for a PAYCUT. The stimulus money had to go to the schools, not to administration, but the administrators can't stand to see the the teachers get something, and took money from the General Fund to give themselves and EVEN BIGGER bonus. Meanwhile, teachers went without needed new textbooks, or even enough copy paper or printer ink, which they have to purchase out of their OWN POCKETS.

BRAVO to the Calhoun County School Board! Shame on Liberty County!
