The Calhoun County School Board created a fund four years ago and a portion of that money has enabled the Blountstown High School band to purchase a new drum set.
Board members voted to cut 10 percent from their salaries with funds placed in an account to pay for such needs as state championship rings for all school teams, from culinary to business to sports. In addition, needs such as the drum set are now able to be met.
School Board member Danny Hassig was on hand for the presentation and noted, “The fund is up to $40,000 and, if we keep voting to do this every year, we will eventually be able to offer scholarships.”
Superintendent Tommy McClellan commended Stewart Hobbie who took the reigns as band director. “He is doing a terrific job recruiting and building this program,” McClellan said, adding that over 50 fifth grade students have expressed interest in joining the band next year when they reach middle school.
