It was three up, three down for the Altha Wildcats last week as they defeated Ponce de Leon, Tallavana and Liberty County.

First up was Ponce de Leon on the road Jan. 3 with Altha bringing home a 53-28 win. Will Rogers led the Cats and outscored the entire Ponce de Leon team, bringing in 29 points, including eight three-pointers, seven of those coming in the first half. “He is shooting the basketball really well,” says Coach Warren Roberts.

Will’s brother, Kent Rogers, a sophomore, was next with 11 points. P.J. Iler followed with six points.

Anthony Young provided four, Colby Barrentine chipped in three, and Jacob Warner added two.

The Cats hosted Tallavana on Thursday and were the clear winners with a 60-41 final score.

“P.J. Iler had a really good game with 23 points,” says Coach Roberts. Will Rogers followed with 16, Kent Rogers had 13, Warner had four, and Young and Zac Morris added two points a piece.

Friday night brought the Cats across the river to Liberty County for one of the most exciting games of the season. Altha celebrated a 56-14 win over the Bulldogs.

“It was a really good team effort,” says Coach Roberts. “I think we played the hardest we played all year. Everybody scored.”

Altha was led by Will Rogers who scored 18 points - 15 of those in the second quarter. Iler had another good game with 14 points. Warner offered nine, Morris had six, and Young added five. Barrentine and Kent Rogers brought in two points each.

After a rocky start, Altha is on quite a winning streak, winning six out of the last seven games and improving their record to 6-7.

The J.V. Cats also celebrated this week with three straight wins. They defeated Ponce de Leon, 27-26, Tallavana, 45-27, and Liberty County, 29-16. The wins improved their record to 8-5.

“Coach Nichols has got them playing really well,” Coach Roberts points out.

Altha traveled to Graceville Tuesday and will be back at home Thursday to host R.F. Munroe. Game time is 5:30 p.m. for J.V., followed by varsity at 7. Wewa comes to town on Friday for a district game and Vernon will be in Wildcat country Monday with game times the same each night.

Be sure to buy a $1 ticket at the games for a chance to win a gas grill on senior night. All proceeds benefit the Wildcat basketball program.
