“That was fun! I didn’t want to come home. I can’t wait for next year,” said first-time camper, Autumn McLemore, after returning home from 4-H Camp Timpoochee last week, and she wasn’t the only one. More than eighty campers from three Florida counties echoed her sentiment as they departed from the camp in Niceville, FL last Friday.
Each year, Calhoun County youth attend County 4-H Camp at Camp Timpoochee, and youth participate in activities such as kayaking, snorkeling, archery, geocaching, marine studies, arts and crafts, field games, skits, and campfires. This year’s camp theme at Camp Timpoochee was based on Greek and Roman Mythology, so specially themed activities including Camp Olympics were planned to make the week even more exciting for campers. The result was a huge success. The campers had a great time.
Residential camp has been a long-time tradition of Florida 4-H. It teaches teamwork, leadership, communication, problem solving, creativity, healthy lifestyles, and science, engineering, and technology. The benefits of residential 4-H camps for youth have been measured in several studies, and Calhoun County is proud to be a part of this continuing tradition; helping our youth to grow and learn.
