Blountstown volunteer firefighters responded to a call for one of their own last Tuesday afternoon when the South Main Street home of Ken and Arleshia Speights caught on fire. “This is devastating,” said Blountstown Fire Chief Ben Hall. “Ken is one of our firefighters.”

Fortunately, the couple and their children were not at home when the blaze broke out around 1 p.m. Their small dog, Rufus came running out the minute Major Rodney Smith of the Blountstown Police Department forced open the front door. The West Side Volunteer Fire Department also assisted.

In addition to volunteering for the fire department, Speights also serves as School Board member for district 4.

According to Chief Hall, the majority of damage was to the back of the home with smoke damage throughout the house. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze before it destroyed the front rooms, as well as a couple back bedrooms.
