A funeral service for Pierce Jefferson Burke, Jr., “Jeff”, 68, of Blythewood, South Carolina, will be held at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, July 30, 2009 at Shives Funeral Home Chapel, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia.
Interment with military honors will follow at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o’clock Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 520 Gervais St., Ste. 300, Columbia, SC 29201.
Mr. Burke died July 23, 2009. Born in Winter Heaven, FL on May 25, 1941, he was a son of the late Pierce Jefferson Burke, Sr. and Margie Baggett Burke. Jeff was a retired captain of the US Army, and a decorated Vietnam War veteran. He served in Delta Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), “Angry Skipper”.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra of Blythewood; daughters and sons-in-law, Tracy and Scott Harling of Columbia, Carol and Mustafa Karadeniz of Atlanta, and Lesa Burke of Blythewood; seven grandchildren, brothers, Asa Mack Burke of Panama City, Joseph Carter Burke of New Orleans; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jeff was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
