The year in business was celebrated at the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce’s 64th annual banquet held Thursday at the W.T. Neal Civic Center.

Recognizing those who have served the community at large, as well as those who have worked hard for the Chamber, is a big part of banquet night. This year, Drew Peacock, Jr. of Altha was named Calhoun County’s Citizen of the Year.

“This year’s recipient is someone who never seems to give up,” Chamber President Shelly Burns told the crowd when describing Peacock. “He had a vision many years ago, and still to this day works to make that vision a reality. He is a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, church deacon for more than 50 years, and die hard supporter of the Altha Wildcats. He has served as Clerk, Mayor, and Council member at various times over 50 years, working hard to secure infrastructure for the Town of Altha. He helped secure the first water system for the town in the late fifties, and just recently helped secure funding for the present water system upgrade. He spent four years on the Calhoun County Commission, 20 years on the Apalachee Regional Planning Council, 33 years on the Calhoun County Senior Citizens Board, and 38 years in the Blountstown Lions Club. This resilient man is well-know at the State Capitol as he continues to lobby for Calhoun County every chance he gets. He certainly works to make every day count.”

Another major award is the Volunteer of the Year. This honor went to Ken Speights.

“He is a man that grew up here, and now spends his time working to make it a better place,” Burns remarked of Speights. “His volunteer efforts span from working as a volunteer fire fighter to mentoring youth. He founded the non-profit Mayhaw Community Association and uses that organization help at-risk kids and promote structure in the community. Through his efforts, young men assist elderly citizens with clean up projects. He also coordinates Tent Summits which encourage fathers to spend time with their sons, and plans “socials” for mothers and daughters that focus on etiquette and proper protocol. He often takes youth to visit college campuses to expose them to the college environment. This individual has never shied away from a challenge, and works hard to preserve and improve our community.”
