Schools across the state got the first of two report cards this week. The Calhoun County School District maintained an overall grade of “A” for 2010. Over in Liberty County, the district improved from a “C” to a “B” grade.

In order for schools to receive an “A” grade, they must score 525 points or more in the required areas, meet adequate progress of lowest students in reading and math, and test at least 95 percent of eligible students.

Here in Calhoun County, administrators and faculty at Blountstown Elementary School were extremely disappointed to drop from an “A” to a “B” this year. Not only did they meet the required points for an “A” grade, they exceeded them, scoring an impressive 550 with 99 percent of students tested. However, 50% or more of the lowest 25% students must show gains in reading and math. Although a remarkable 65% showed gains in reading, only 49% did so in math - just one percentage point shy of the mark, resulting in a “B” grade.

Both Blountstown Middle School and Carr School maintained an “A” grade.

Tolar K-8 in Bristol dropped from a “B” to a “C” this year. Hosford K-8 improved from a “B” to an “A” grade.

High schools are being graded different this year and their report cards will not be released until sometime in the fall. Therefore, scores for Altha School, Blountstown High, and Liberty County High will be announced later this year.
