Altha’s FCCLA chapter will be traveling to Chicago, IL this summer for national competition. While at state competition this year in Orlando, Mrs. Granger found out about a recipe competition that we could enter. We decided that if we won it would be a great way to help pay for our trip. It was called the “Otis Spunkmeyer Recipe Competition”. Contest rules stated that any student attending the National Convention this summer was eligible to enter the contest. The challenge was to create an original dessert recipe using one flavor of Otis Spunkmeyer cookies and up to 5 other ingredients.

Two students from Altha created a recipe, one using sugar cookies and the other using chocolate chip. Mrs. Granger and Cortney happened to be sitting in her classroom when she received a call from an Otis Spunkmeyer representative telling her that her student Cortney Harris had won first place in the Otis Spunkmeyer Recipe contest! The prize was $2000: One thousand dollars goes to your school’s FCCLA chapter to use for expenses for national convention, and the other thousand goes to Cortney’s trip to national competition. The recipe that she entered was called Heavenly Cheese Cake.

The reason this win was so extraordinary was because this is the very first time a national competition has been held from Otis Spunkmeyer, and a student from Altha School won.

Since qualifying for Nationals, Altha FCCLA students have held several fundraiser to pay for their expenses, and this one was definitely exciting!

Congratulations to Cortney and Altha FCCLA! Good luck at nationals in July.
