Lady Tigers wrap up season

The Blountstown Lady Tigers wrapped up an exciting season last week at the district tournament.

The week before, on April 12, the girls hosted Wewa and chalked up an impressive 16-4 win. Brittany Griffin was the winning pitcher for the Tigers.

Leading at the plate was Amber Burch with a double and three singles. Lindsey Doyal and Montoya Garrett each had two doubles and a single. Britney Brown and Kelsey Bontrager both added a double. Griffin offered two singles. Randa McCroan chipped in a single.

The Lady Tigers were on the road to Havana Apr. 13 where they shutout East Gadsden, 29-13. Griffin took the win on the mound with Brown relieving her in the fifth.

Griffin also led at bat with a triple, a double, three singles and a walk. Anna Kelley added a triple and two singles. Doyal had three singles. Garrett brought in a triple and a single. Brown had a double, Ann Marie Silcox provided two singles and Burch, along with Selena Williams, added a single.

“We played 20 girls in this game,” says Coach Bubba Johnson.

The girls headed across the river to take on Liberty County April 15. They weren’t at all happy with the 16-0 loss to the Lady Bulldogs. Brown took the loss on the mound. She provided a double for the Tigers, as did Amber Burch.

“It was a terrible game for us,” Coach Johnson remarks.

Seniors Kelley and Griffin were honored before the Apr. 16 game against East Gadsden at BHS. Kelley has played for the Lady Tigers for three years (she had one year at Altha prior to that) and Griffin has been a starter at BHS for all four years of high school.

The seniors were certainly pleased with the end result that night: a 16-6 win over East Gadsden. Griffin got the win on the mound. She also brought in two singles and had a walk. Garrett provided a double, two singles, and walked. McCroan and Williams brought in two singles a piece. Kelley, Silcox, and Doyal each chipped in a single.

BHS hosted the district 2-2A tournament last week. The Lady Tigers (#6) took on Vernon (#3) on Wednesday. They fought hard, but came up short, 7-1.

“We hit the ball hard at times, but usually straight at them,” says Coach Johnson.

Brown was the losing pitcher. At the plate, Kelley had two singles, Brown had a double, and singles were provided by Williams, Burch and Griffin.

The Lady Tigers ended the season with a 13-11 record. The J.V. girls ended at 12-3 with one tie.

The district tournament was rained out on Monday. By week’s end, the South Walton Seahawks and Sneads Pirates were in the championship game.

“The Seahawks’ pitcher, Shelby Watson, struck out 18, allowed only one hit, and two walks in the contest,” says Coach Johnson. “She was truly outstanding.”

South Walton won 1-0 on a walkoff homerun with two outs in the bottom of the 10th. They were set to take on Baker Tuesday with Sneads traveling to Northview.
