The Blountstown Lady Tigers won two out of three last week and are gearing up to host the district tournament.

The Lady Tigers took on Vernon at home Apr. 5 and fell short, 7-5. Brittany Griffin took the loss on the mound after relieving Britney Brown. Lindsey Doyal led at the plate with a single and two RBIs. Ann Marie Silcox, Anna Kelley, and Brittany Griffin each added a single.

Holmes County came calling on Apr. 9 and the Tigers edged them, 10-9. Griffin relieved Brown again, this time for the win. Doyal was the offensive leader with a double, a single, and two RBIs. Selena Williams brought in three singles. Kelley offered a single, three walks, and three runs scored. Brown, Griffin, Silcox, Amber Burch, and Randa McCroan all had singles. Kelsey Bontrager provided a game winning pinch hit double with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, driving in the tying and winning runs.

“We overcame a 9-5 deficit in the bottom of the seventh,” says Coach Bubba Johnson.

Graceville was in town Apr. 10 and the Tigers came out on top once again, 5-4.

All five of BHS’ runs were scored in the bottom of the seventh. “Kelsey’s two out pinch hit drove in the winning run,” Coach Johnson remarks. “We hardly touched the ball good until the bottom of the 7th.”

Kelley led with a double and McCroan had two hits. Also getting a hit for the Lady Tigers were Williams, Burch, Brown, Doyal, and Griffin, who was also the winning pitcher.

In J.V. action, the girls defeated Vernon Apr. 5 with a score of 7-3. Courtney McFarland was the winning pitcher. Leading batters were Bontrager with a double and a triple, followed by Kassie Wood with two singles. Kim Jenks, Jordan Griffin, Tiffany Abbott, and Marysa Lee each had a single.
BHS will host Gadsden County at 6 p.m. Friday which is senior night.

The district tournament gets underway at Blountstown on Monday, Apr. 19, and continues through Friday, Apr. 23, with the championship game that day. The top two teams will advance to the playoffs the following week. The first day’s action will pit Sneads (#2 seed) against Holmes County at 4 p.m., followed by South Walton (#1 seed) v. Cottondale. On Tuesday, Blountstown (#6) will play Vernon (#3) at 4 p.m., with Bozeman v. Graceville at 6 p.m. Next will be the winner of the Sneads v. Holmes County game playing the winner of Blountstown v. Vernon at 4 p.m. The Graceville v. Bozeman winner will face the winner of South Walton v. Cottondale at 6 p.m. The winners from Thursday night will vie for the district title on Friday at 6 p.m.

Admission is $5 per person each day, as required by the Florida High School Athletic Association guidelines. “Please come out and support our community as we host this event,” says Coach Johnson. “As always, let’s play with great sportsmanship.”
