Bonnie M. Johnson (Mickey), age 74, of Clarksville, FL passed away Friday, January 8,2021, at his home surrounded by his family.

Mickey was born in Ocala, FL on August 2, 1946 to Bonnie and Myrtice (Howard) Johnson and had lived in Clarksville for the past 42 years. Mickey grew up in Dunnellon, FL and graduated from Dunnellon High School in 1964. Mickey enlisted in the US Army on January 3, 1965. After basic training and Advanced Individual Training as an Infantryman, he attended parachute jump school at Ft. Benning, GA. Upon completion of jump school, he was assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade. In August 1965, he was sent to the Republic of Vietnam, where he was wounded in combat and was awarded the Purple Heart. Upon completing his tour in Vietnam, he was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, NC. While at Ft. Bragg, he transitioned into the US Army Special Forces (Green Berets). In August 1969, Staff Sergeant Johnson returned to Vietnam with the 5th Special Forces Group and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Achievement in Ground Operations Against Hostile Forces. After completing his second tour in Vietnam, he was transferred to the 8th Special Group at Ft. Gulick in the Panama Canal Zone. In 1972, Mickey returned to Dunnellon, FL, where he attended college and worked as a police officer. In May of 1975, he was catastrophically injured while riding a horse and was confined to a wheelchair for the remainder of his life. After his injury, he served as a city councilman, and then mayor, of Dunnellon, until he relocated to Clarksville, FL with his parents and two children in 1979. Mickey received his license to preach the Gospel on July 14, 1982, and graduated from the Baptist Bible Institute in Graceville, FL. For many years, he served as Associate Pastor of Poplar Head Baptist Church. He also served as an interim pastor and filled in at many area churches. He and his wife Sylvia attended Open Arms Assembly of God. Mickey was an avid horse lover and owned many horses, mules, and donkeys over the years. He was an active member of the Panhandle Saddle Club and attended area horse shows for many years. He shared this passion for horses with his family, and his influence is still evident today. Mickey loved his family dearly, and for many years, devoted much of his time to his daughters and nieces. On January 20, 2007, Mickey and his wife Sylvia were married. Sylvia was a loving and devoted wife, and never left his side. Mickey was preceded in death by his parents, Bonnie and Myrtice Johnson and a special grandson, Ryan Flowers.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sylvia Johnson of Clarksville, FL; daughters, Amy and husband, Dave Steedman, of Ocala, FL, Lori and husband, Chris Flowers of Kinard, FL; grandchildren: Karissa Scott, Meagan Steedman, and Blair Steedman, great grandson, Kanaan Scott; brother Mike Johnson and wife, Brenda of Clarksville, FL; nieces: Bonnie Richards, Tessa Garnett, and Amanda Dehn, and several great nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held Tuesday, January 12, 2021, at 11:00 a.m., at the Poplar Head Baptist Church cemetery with Reverend Charles Coley and Reverend David Baker officiating.
All arrangements were under the direction of Marlon Peavy at Peavy Funeral Home in Blountstown, FL. 850-674-2266.
