FROM THE CALHOUN COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD OFFICE

Calhoun County Take Stock in Children Council members interviewed local ninth graders Jan. 28 who applied for a Take Stock in Children Scholarship.

All students interviewed by Council members did an outstanding job in presenting themselves in a professional manner and in being prepared for the interview.

Council Members were pleased to be able to award three scholarships this year. Scholarships were awarded to David Causey, from Blountstown High School and Michaela Strawn and Trevor Wriston, from Altha School. David is the son of Roy and Susan Causey of Blountstown, Michaela is the daughter of Tim and Laura Bailey of Clarksville, and Trevor is the son of Marie Kosmos of Altha.

When each of these 9th grade students graduate from high school, their Take Stock in Children Scholarship will be activated. In the meantime, as a scholarship recipient, each student will be provided support in order to be successful through their high school and college years. In addition to a four-year college scholarship, each recipient is provided with a mentor to provide motivation, support, and tutoring, plus continuous monitoring and intervention services to support the student’s educational achievements, along with college and career counseling.

In accepting these scholarships, the students will sign performance contracts agreeing to get good grades, exhibit positive behavior, demonstrate a willingness to work with their mentor, and remain drug and crime free. If the students adhere to their contracts, then they receive their four year college scholarships.

The four-year scholarships that were awarded to David, Michaela, and Trevor were made possible through monetary donations from people and businesses in our community. The number of scholarships awarded each year depends entirely upon donations received. Donations made to the program stay in our county and go to our students.

For information on how you can help support Take Stock in Children with donations or mentoring services, contact Barbara Hathaway at 674-5927, Ext. 21.

Bloutstown has continually fallen behind in all aspects of growth in that community. Look around your community and it's not hard to see the vision were the city and county funds are being spent. Our police force does not reflect a community that enhances growth. How many African American are on your police force. How many African American teachers are in your school system. How many African American do you have as elected offficals in your community. If you're not playing sports chances are, you are not capable of receiving an academic scholarship is what the community is saying. The scholarships are not the problem, it's the ones that are making the decisions(presenting)the scholarships. Blountstown, every community has to come together and have a forum on the things that are not right in the community. Need I remind you how some people get put in jail for selling drugs while other do not. Your law enforcement believes that drugs only exist in the African American community and not in the entire community I'm not advocating drugs in no way, I believe if you sell drugs you should be punished for it, for the simply reason drugs not only destroys lifes, it destroys community. If we want a change to occur in Blountstown it has to be done through peaceful forums. It starts with educating yourself about your community, the issues that are important to you as well as your family .
And finally Blountstown, your community can not and will not change unless the individuals that lives in that community changes.

Several black students were among those interviewed this year. Last year in February three scholarships were awarded, two to black students and one to a white student.

WHAT!! Last year two African American kids got scholarships and only one White?????? How can we expect our White kids to succeed if the powers that be won't let them?........sounds silly doesn't it. No where in this country will people progress untill kids/adults/officers/presidents ect are not labeled by black or white or whatever, be an American, period, and stop useing excusses. According to Crayola.......white is a color too.

And what exactly would your response have been if the numbers were turned around? I agree with Kelly. Our community is not growing the way it should. It's as if we are stuck behind everyone around us. People around here need to stop seeing color and start seeing potential. The black and white issue was over before I was even born, but around here you would think the was just ended yesturday. GET OVER IT! It is NOT black and white anymore!

We're not crayolas! We are all Gods children and God is not looking at your skin color. And neither should you be. Let's go forward. Not backward like our ancestors.
And black is made up of many colors. And white is not a color, but a reflection. Learn your crayolas.

Not only is white a crayola, but it is one of the 133 esential cayolas according to the company web site. However, an interesting fact, in 1963 the company renames the flesh crayon "peach" to recognize that not everyone's skin color is the same. ( if a person were actualy "white" we would think he were ill)
I am sorry I even brought up the whole crayola thing, It seems we all have the same idea, just a differnt way of saying it. I officialy drop the whole crayon thing.

Ah, that was my point, the numbers were turned around last year. I am all for looking past anything but potential, I took Kelly's comments to mean that some folks were being passed up due to race using that one event as evidence, I only ment to point out it was the oppsite last year, negating the evidence given. However, if evey one turned one color all at once, say, Green. The first time someone won something, someone else would say they only got it because they were tall.....humans, we can't help ourselves.

Wow. Three young students in the Blountstown community are awarded scholarships to helpmake this country a better place by furthering their education and ignorant people (white and black) have to make worthless conversation about issues in the past. It maybe just me, but i thnk thats why the community isnt flourishing.
