An Altha woman has been charged with aggravated assault and criminal mischief after chasing a neighbor with a broom handle.
Lea Long was arrested in the case.
According to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, Dep. Nate Jordan responded to a call Feb. 23 at an Altha trailer park. A woman told him she had been playing pool next door the night before when she heard Long yelling from another trailer, upset that someone had killed her cats. Long approached the woman with a wooden broom handle and began hitting her vehicle, breaking out both tail lights and damaging the trunk. When the woman told Long to stop hitting her car, she alleged Long began chasing her with the broom handle raised as if she was going to strike her.
The woman locked herself in a building to get away from Long, however, she said Long stood outside hitting the side of the building with the broom handle and yelling for her to come out. Another tenant came to the woman’s aid and Long left.
Dep. Jordan interviewed Long who he noted was verbally abusive to him, but admitted she beat the woman’s tail lights because she killed her cats.
Two dead cats were inside the home and Dep. Jordan noted both appeared to have been shot. Long said she was keeping them so no one else could touch them.
After a brief struggle, Dep. Jordan was able to take Long into custody.
