April 12, 1924 - Aug. 8, 2014 Madelyn K. Rushing passed away on August 8, 2014 surrounded by her loved ones.
She was born on April 12th, 1924 in DeFuniak Springs, Florida and was the daughter of Mildred Revell King and John King. Her youth was spent in Bristol, Florida and later in Tallahassee. Madelyn attended Leon County High School and Florida State University where she earned a degree in Social work. She was a proud member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority of FSU and made many lifelong friends while in college. Madelyn practiced as a social worker in Florida early in her career and later in Alabama. In her capacity she helped many people and children in particular. Madelyn served as District Supervisor for Crippled Children's in Birmingham serving countless children over the years. Madelyn was a devoted member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church for over 45 years, she served as president of her Sunday School class for many years, first with the Doris Pereman Class and later with the Steve Aldman Class. She was active in the
Homebound Program at Dawson for many years visiting Dawson Members who could not travel to church. Madelyn leaves behind a legacy of service, care and love.
She is the widow of Arthur Mead Rushing and is survived by daughters Mildred Link, Robin Rushing and granddaughter Lydia Link. She was dearly loved by all of her family sister-in-law Frances Rushing, her sons Frank Rushing, Rick Rushing and his wife Sandra all from the Destin, Florida area. Also on the Rushing side she is survived by nieces and nephews Darlene Woodall, Deles Woodall, James Woodall, Marna Byars and Rusty Rushing. Madelyn lovingly said she was related to all of the Revells in Liberty and Leon County Florida. She is survived by Drs. Judy and Louis St. Petery, and their children Elizabeth Hancock, Dr. Leigh St. Petery, and Louis Jr. St. Petery. Her cousins Harrell Wood, Gordon Parker, Silas Gordon, Jack Revell and Gene Revell reside in Florida. The family wishes to thank Care First Hospice and the wonderful staff at St. Vincent's Hospital. Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, August 15, 2014 at Dawson Memorial Baptist in the small chapel located in the building directly behind the main sanctuary In Lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Alabama Children's Hospital Foundation in Birmingham.
