A Calhoun County man is in serious condition at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital after a Saturday morning crash that resulted in the deaths of four Defuniak Springs residents.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Zebulon S. Sims, 22, of Blountstown, was behind the wheel of a 2002 Chevrolet pickup around 6:25 a.m. on the I-10 entrance ramp from SR 71, headed west. At the same time, a 2000 Nissan Sentra was eastbound on I-10 with four occupants who had not been identified at press time. For unknown reasons, Sims’ vehicle reached the westbound lanes and he lost control. His truck began rotating counter-clockwise and crossed both westbound lanes, entering the median, then the eastbound lanes. The left side of his pickup collided with the front of the Nissan. The truck continued to rotate and landed in a ditch. The Nissan rotated clockwise and wound up on the shoulder.
All four occupants of the Nissan were pronounced dead at the scene.
Sims, who was on his way to work at the time of the crash, was taken to TMH where he was initially placed in critical condition with a skull fracture and other injuries. His condition has since been upgraded to serious.
The accident is being investigated by the FHP.
