An Altha man wound up behind bars over the weekend after an early morning altercation with his pregnant girlfriend.

Brad Curtis Phillips, 30, has been charged with battery on a pregnant victim and resisting arrest without violence.

According to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, Dep. Caleb Tolbert responded to the residence just after 1 a.m. Saturday where the victim’s mother was administering oxygen to her. The woman advised she and her boyfriend were at her sister’s home drinking and playing cards when he became belligerent and began yelling at her. They were asked to leave and, as they were walking down the driveway to their home, he allegedly began yelling and placed his hands around her neck. She said she made it to their home where he choked her until she starting losing air. The woman’s mother came to her rescue and broke up the fight. The man fled.

Dep. John Scheetz arrived to assist in locating Phillips. The woman, who smelled of alcohol, admitted she had been drinking and had red marks on her neck and facial area. Due to her being three months pregnant, she was taken to Calhoun-Liberty Hospital.

Phillips returned to the home and became belligerent with deputies, wrestling them until he had to be tazed. He still failed to comply, tried to run and was tazed again. On the ground, Phillips would not roll over and was tazed a third time then placed under arrest.
