Time consuming drives and a bend but don’t break defense was enough for the Blountstown Tigers to squeak past Chipley Friday night, 6-3. The win pushed Blountstown to 2-0 with a tough Wewa team coming to town for homecoming Friday night.

“We had a good opening drive inside their 20 but got sacked for a loss of 9 then threw three straight incompletions,” coach Greg Jordan said Monday. “We held the ball for eight minutes, then they held it for six on their first drive. We only had three possessions in the first half,” Jordan noted.

Tiger running backs had a good night racking up 210 yards on 30 attempts and a 7 yard per carry average. Jawon Mosley led the Tigers with 84 yards on 11 carries including big runs of 13, 16, and 29. Princeton Grant added 54 yards on 5 attempts. Grant had big runs of 14, 27, and 21. The 27 yard run was for the lone touchdown in the third quarter of the game.

Darren Huff, returning to the lineup for the first time, had 56 yards on 3 rushes including one long run of 42. Leon Broxton added 24 tough yards on 8 carries.

Chipley’s best drive of the first half reached the Tiger 25. Ryan McIntyre ended the threat with an interception for the Tigers.

Chipley’s field goal was set up by a 59 yard run on their opening drive of the third quarter. The Tiger defense gave up one yard on three running plays forcing the 24 yard field goal that gave Chipley a 3-0 lead. Blountstown scored on their next series to go ahead 6-3 after the missed PAT.

“Defensively, we’ve only given up one touchdown in eight quarters. Our defense is keeping us in the games. Our offensive line is doing a good job and our backs are running hard. Our passing game has got to get better,” Jordan stated.

Dowling Lee led the Tigers on defense getting in on 11 tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss. Alexander Garrett had 10 tackles, a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss. Jawon Mosley was in on 9 tackles followed by Paul Mosley and Jason Money with 5 each. Princeton Grant, Ryan McIntyre, Stafford Dawson and Frankie Murrell were each in on 3 tackles. Bryon Hall, Timmy Giradot and D.J. Brunson also made defensive plays.

The Tigers will host the Wewa Gators for homecoming Friday night at Bowles Field. The Gators are 3-0 with wins over Chipley, McClay and Jefferson County. “They have a tough, physical defense and one of the best runningbacks in the area in Chance Knowles,” Jordan added.
