Gun control is one hot topic in the nation, prompting our question of the week: What's your stand on gun control? Some lawmakers believe there should be mental health screenings before guns or ammunition are purchased. Others believe more laws regarding safeguarding weapons is in order. Some want assault rifles banned. Where do you stand? Please post comments on our website or email to news@thecountyrecord.net

Bill Clinton tackled the gun control issue. The results was that you couldn't find a used gun anywhere. People rushed out and started buying guns at an accelerated rate. The same thing is happening today. The danger in more gun control is making criminals out of law biding citizens. The problem is not enforcing the laws on the books. Emotions run high after these tragic events. The famous words, "Don't let a tragedy go to waste." It is an atrocity to legislate based on emotion. Cooler heads need to prevail. The Fact is that the owner of the guns used at Sandy Hook was killed gaining the killer access to the weapons used. We don't outlaw SUVs driven by a drunk driver that kills an entire family or 747s used by terrorist. It seems to me that the right to bear arms was to protect us from tyranny.Out of control spending is a much bigger problem. One short barrel shot gun with number 4 buckshot would have disabled the Sandy Hook murderer while he was trying to shoot his way in the locked front door. Defense is a far better strategy.

I agree with Gary. Also, as I stated on FB:

First, in a nation of almost 315 million citizens, however heinous an act of an individual may be, it does not reflect the propensity of the rest of the population. I am satisfied with the current gun laws. Sure, some people may buy a gun legally and then go off the deep end, and some may get one illegally and do the same thing. My point is that with this many people things are going to happen sometimes. Also, this is huge political issue. To be up front I consider myself a liberal. That being said, I recognize the fact that I always hold that the government has no place in my personal business. To all the other liberals out there, it's a two way street. Without going long in my post, consider the things that you wish the government would stay out of and leave gun policy alone. Idiots kill people and other idiots legislate for the sake of legislation. No matter what law is passed to limit guns, these things will take place from time to time. School security should be looked at and updated. While a noble and symbolic gesture, an unarmed, off duty marine standing outside a school is not the answer to major security problems.
