BY COACH LEANNA HALL

This past Saturday, the Altha Lady Wildcats participated in a volleyball tournament at Chipley High School where they competed with many teams. Beating Holmes County and losing to Walton, they were placed in the silver division.

The Wildcats beat Wewa, moving them to the silver division championship. The girls faced Freeport, playing a long, rough match. The Lady Cats fell short with a loss, receiving runner-up in the championship.

Our season began a little rocky, with game cancellations due to storm, as well as some crucial losses. We began the season with a less than stellar performance at the Preseason Classic and continued with two district losses to Wewa and Vernon.

Realizing that we had a lot of work ahead of us, we have steadily been practicing and trying to improve in our weaker areas. Our mental game has been our top focus. With each game, we have seen improvements and are continuing on our trek to “prepare for the end.” After all, it is the district playoffs that bring on the championships.

Losing early has not made us a weaker team, but has surely made us stronger. Our opponents may have counted us out, but we've definitely counted ourselves in. We are seeking a district championship, the first for our school in years, as well as much more play beyond the district level!

With no seniors, we are fortunate to have a core that will be with us for the next two years. A team comprised of 8 juniors and 2 sophomores are stepping up to the challenge. They've been flexible on the court, playing multiple positions until we find what will work the best for us.

We were able to avenge our Wewa loss this past weekend at the Chipley tournament, boosting our physical and mental game even more. My team and I realize the quest that is before us and we are willing to work and conquer.
