A Calhoun County couple had no idea what they had won when they had the winning bid on a storage warehouse in Pensacola.
Clay and Lana Knight of Altha could see some boxes and fine home furnishings in the storage unit that went up for auction after the previous owner failed to pay the bill. After paying just over $1000 for the unit, they began digging into the contents. Clay says his wife was stunned when she opened a container and saw body parts.
Authorities found over 100 human body parts - ranging from ears to brains and hearts. Some were stored in cups and trash bags. Turned out the unit belonged to former Assistant Medical Examiner Michael Berkland, 57, who did private autopsies for funeral homes from 1997 to 2007.
Berkland is facing up to five years in prison for improper disposal/storage of hazardous waste.
