Three legendary former Blountstown High School football coaches will be honored during halftime of the Tigers’ season opener
Friday, Aug. 31.

The field is named for Coach Claude “C.B.” Bowles, who came to Calco High back in 1927. Tribute will be paid to Bowles who actually built the current football field, along with his players.

“He turned a swamp into a playable field,” says Jim Kearce, who spearheaded the event.

Salute will also be given to Coach Ted Cooper, famed coach during the 1950s. A dedication will be held at halftime to officially name the Ted Cooper Stadium at Bowles Field.

“He became one of the best coaches around,” Kearce says of Cooper. “He coached football, basketball and baseball and was successful at all three.”

Also set to be recognized is Coach David Pitts who led the Tigers to three state championships in the 1970s.

“If you were going to win a state championship back then, you had to come through Blountstown to get it,” Kearce remarks.

About two decades ago, the field house was named for Coach Pitts, however, this will be the first formal ceremony to dedicate the field house bearing his name.

Anyone who played or cheered under any of these coaches is invited to join the ceremony on the field during halftime Aug. 31. Prior to the event, a reception will be held at the new Blountstown High School at 5:30 p.m.

All former cheerleaders and football players are also invited to attend the pre-ceremony celebration.
