Calhoun County Sheriff David Tatum has announced he will not seek re-election.
Tatum was elected in 2000 and has served for three consecutive terms.
“I think it is time for a new sheriff,” Tatum remarks in a letter to constituents. “There is a lifespan an individual can serve with the intensity that I have over the past three terms. I am currently in my 33rd year in public service here, 12 of those years as sheriff, and I am tired.”

As of press time Tuesday, only two candidates had stepped forward to seek the sheriff’s post. Ken Futch, who previously served as a captain at the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, is running, along with Altha Police Chief James “Jimmy” Baggett. Both are running with no party affiliation.
Qualifying week is set for Monday, June 4, through Friday, June 8.
