The legacy of longtime Calhoun County educator Louise Ryals will live on forever in the lives of not only the students she taught, but also the ones who will benefit from scholarships donated in her memory.
Her husband, Gene Ryals, is shown above presenting $400 worth of “quarters for scholarships” to Barbara Hathaway for the Calhoun County Take Stock in Children program.
“When the first state quarters were minted, Louise suggested we collect them and we did,” Gene recalls. After her death in 2007, he continued to collect them. “I recently asked my grandson to count them and the total was $397.25. I added enough to make it $400 even.”
The Ryals family also gave a memorial contribution to the scholarship fund after her death.
Gene notes, “She would be very pleased.”
