It was another week of close games for the Altha Wildcats as they work toward a win on the basketball court.

Altha hosted Graceville in a district game Thursday, keeping fans on the edge of their seats throughout the entire four quarters. With just 25 seconds on the clock, the score was tied, 47-47. The Cats fought hard to the finish, but Graceville put two points on the board for the win in the final two seconds.

“As with every team in our district, we’ve been competitive,” says Coach Warren Roberts. “It’s just a matter of putting together four quarters.”

Altha was led by Will Rogers with 16 points. Jacob Warner followed with 13. Kent Rogers brought in 10. P.J. Iler had five and Zac Morris added three.

The Cats headed to Gator country Friday for a district matchup with Wewa that turned into another close game.

“We were up by 11 after one quarter and led for three quarters,” says Coach Roberts. “We went into the fourth quarter with a one point lead and they got real hot and we didn’t execute. They beat us 60-52.”

The loss put the Cats at 0-6 for the season. “It’s a matter of learning how to win,” Coach Roberts remarks, adding he sees improvement every week from his young team that includes two sophomores and a freshman in the starting lineup.

Will Rogers led again with 16. He was closely followed by his brother, Kent Rogers, and Jacob Warner with 15 points a piece. P.J. Iler added four and Colby Barrentine chipped in two.

In J.V. action, the Cats lost to Graceville, 34-17, on Thursday. They were back in business Friday night, defeating Wewa, 33-26, and improving their record to 3-3.

Corey Barton led the J.V. Cats against Wewa with 13 points. Jay Fielder brought in eight. Nick Young and Kyler Dew contributed six points each.

Altha will host Ponce De Leon Friday with J.V. at 5:30 p.m. and varsity at 7. The J.V. boys will host North Bay Haven Saturday at 5 p.m. and the varsity will take the court at 6:30 p.m. to face Rocky Bayou Christian. The Cats travel to Vernon Tuesday for a district game.
