John Robert Benn, Sr. of Altha passed away Saturday, October 1, 2011, at his home at the age of 85.
He was born September 27, 1926, in Providence, Rhode Island, to the late Albert and Martha (Mather) Benn. He moved from Mexico Beach, Florida, to Altha in 1993. He was a retired teacher. He was in the U. S. Army and served during World War II in Battery “C”, 146th Field Artillery, 41st Infantry. He was also a member of #7672 Veteran of Foreign Wars in Blountstown and was a member of Masonic Lodge #10 F&AM in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Port St. Joe, Florida.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Joyce Benn; four sons, John Benn, Jr. of Altha, Victor Benn of Murphy, North Carolina, Benjamin Benn and Byron Benn of Cocoa, Florida; five daughters, Martha Gorsline of Clifton, New Jersey, Evelyn Young of Green Acres, Florida, Julie Finch of Cocoa, Florida, Susan Jundt of Cottontown, Tennessee, and April Johnson of Walton, Kentucky; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Herbert Benn of West Palm Beach, Florida and Ronald Benn of Bristol, Rhode Island; two sisters, Ada Maney of Bristol, Rhode Island and Patie Kwon of West Palm Beach, Florida.
Graveside services will be at 12:30 p.m., Friday, October 7, at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Florida. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, October 6, at Adams Funeral Home in Blountstown.
