Kickoff at 7 p.m. Friday in Holmes County Tigers take bite out of Gators

The Blountstown Tigers had their first test against an opponent Thursday night at Bowles Field against the Wewa Gators in the kickoff classic and came out on top, 34-14.

The score was impressive, but coach Greg Jordan says his team has to work hard and improve to compete with some tough teams on this year’s schedule.

“We did what we needed to do on offense against Wewa. We still had some blown or missed blocking assignments. With the exception of senior Patrick Pitts, we’ve got some young kids on the offensive line who will have to get better,” Jordan pointed out.

Defensively, with the exception of a long drive to open the second half, Wewa was held to 188 yards of rushing and 22 yards of passing. “Defensively, we played pretty well. We’ve only got three returning starters from last year,” Jordan noted.

This week, the Tigers will host Holmes County who defeated Graceville last week in their kickoff classic, 27-15. “They’re a solid football team and we’ll have to step up to the challenge,” Jordan said Tuesday.

Quarterback Hunter Jordan was 3 of 6 passing for 58 yards and rushed for 58 yards in the game.

A bright spot for the Tiger offense was the speed and moves by the running backs. Javakiel Brigham rushed for 87 yards including touchdown runs of 8, 42, and 23 yards. Marquel Thomas rushed for 95 yards including an 85 yard touchdown dash down the sideline and a 5 yard touchdown run.

Defensively, Anthony Williams led the Tigers with 12 tackles followed by Patrick Pitts and Corin Peterson with 7 each.
